Armory Reveal

You may have read recently that the old Armory building on East Mountain Avenue is being refurbished again. This time, says owner Paul Jenson, he wants to return it to its 1907 roots as a public event hall. Last week, one of the contractors on the project, Jeff Down, took me on a tour of the building. I asked a few questions and took a lot of photos. Here, I’ll show you: [...]

Hell Tree

I think the corner of Horsetooth Road and CR7 should be declared a monument to historical ignorance in Fort Collins.

Look to the Northeast and see what’s left of the Strauss cabin. One of the earliest cabins in the area, restored in the 1990s, and then burned down by some teenagers soon after.

[...]

Ghost train track tours this weekend

The owners of the property threatened by the Greeley pipeline project are offering free tours to the public this weekend. Here are the where and when… [...]

Finding the West White Pine Lookout

West White Pine Lookout

Of the two dozen or so fire lookout towers in Colorado, West White Pine was closest to Fort Collins, almost directly to our west.

Built in 1939, the tower remained on its mountain top until sometime in the mid-1970s.

Then, a helicopter took the cabin and more or less [...]

Downtown pipe dreams

What ideas for downtown do people pitch to the DDA? Here’s a few. Plus some big ideas from the Lost Fort Collins blog. [...]

Meet the Rommels

In 1915, Lewis Wickes Hine came to Fort Collins for a day as part of  a project to document child labor in America. He photographed the Rommel house at 430 N. Loomis. It was boarded up in this October photo because the family was away harvesting beets. They would return to Fort Collins in [...]

Fort Collins Historic Preservation Endangered?

The city plans to cut one of its preservation positions. People who know about such things tell me that it means we’ll still have plenty of regulation, but no time for incentives. This could be a big blow to Fort Collins historic preservation. You can only regulate demolition for so long, before buildings become too run down to save. Some of us plan to show up tonight at City Council to ask for reconsideration. Public comment is from 6:00-6:30 pm at 300 LaPorte Ave., Fort Collins, CO 80521. If you care about such things, we’d like you to show up. Speak, or just be present. It will mean a lot to those who oversee the historic integrity of Fort Collins. [...]

Cloverleaf Dogtrack

Cloverleaf stopped racing dogs in 2007. Surrounded by the new hospital, Centerra, and even the failing outlet mall, the 50-year-old racetrack sold last year. The Medical Center of the Rockies bought the lot. I know that because if you try to explore the ruins, a security guard from the hospital finds you in a couple minutes. She says they will tear it down. Recycle everything. Then build a new hospital building all out of recycled material. She also says, no you can’t take pictures. [...]

Pitkin street car tracks exhumed

Just got a tip from Darrin Goodman (the mando from Horsetooth Mountain Rangers) that construction on Remington and Pitkin has exposed tracks. There were originally 3 trolley lines in Fort Collins, one going to the “new” highschool at Remington and Pitkin. These must be them! [...]

The fight for the GSL&P

The city of Greeley, 40 miles southeast of Fort Collins, just sent letters to Mary Humstone and Rose Brinks, threatening to use eminant domain to explore and eventually develop the women’s Bellvue properties. Greeley should be sending them thank you letters. Enthusiastic preservationists, the women have turned away developers for decades. They also left alone a 100-year-old railbed that crosses the land. That makes their properties the perfect route for a monster pipeline stretching from the foothills to Greeley: [...]
