Fort Collins Place: Poor Sport

Terence’s Note: This post was originally on FortCollinsNouns

There are places in this world that are in plain sight but seen by few. The Poor Sport is one of those places.

It is a fine establishment located in Fort Collins. But I do not know of many residents who know of it.  If you’re one of those people and you’re curious about the Poor Sport this post is not going to be much help to you.

These photographs are all I am going to offer up as clues to the location of the Poor Sport. I can tell you that it is worth finding and do highly recommend lunch at the Poor Sport. Best burger deal in town.

The Poor Sport was one of the first watering holes I visited while on vacation in Fort Collins back in November of 1997. Since then I’ve had many happy returns. Let me know if you ever want to meet up for lunch there one day.

  • Oh….my dear friend the poor sport. I agree re:best burger deal in town. It’s hard to get my father-in-law to go anywhere else when he’s in town to visit.

  • is this for reals? Or are you just luring me into a back alley of Ft. Collins with the promise of a great burger only to rob me at knife point? Curious.

Hello Heidi and thanks for the comment.

Though your idea is interesting, using a blog to rob people at knife point, we could call it “Petty Crime 2.0,” I believe someone would have trouble getting away with such a crime around the Poor Sport.

  • bwa ha ha! lost fort collins has a habit of luring people into back alleys, doesn’t it? any time we’re traveling and i’m walking around the city’s old town i think to myself, “look for the calaboose” — http://www.locksafesystems.com/hist.htm

  • Looks like Old Town to me! :)

  • Okay…so I’m a bit new to this. How do I git my picture on my profile like barefootmeg? :)

  • I remember reading this the first time it published and I’m super thankful for the reminder. I’ve been thinking about going, but now that I’m reminded that there is a burger to try, I’ll be there a whole lot faster!

  • @ Scott To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure how it’s there either! I’m guessing that wordpress is somehow linking my identity here to one that I’ve added somewhere else (either on WordPress or through Gravatar ( http://en.gravatar.com/ ), most likely).

I’m only entering the usual info. in the little boxes above (name, email, website) so it’s figuring out who I am from that, I think, unless there’s an old cookie on my computer.

Try signing up for a wordpress account and that might do it.

Also, while we’re talking about usage issues, has anyone figured out how to get comment alerts? There used to be a way to do it before the site moved and we seem to have lost that function.

Found out where this place is. I won’t spoil it and say where it is…but when is this place open? It’s really a place where I can get food and not get stabbed or anything?

Okay – my curiosity is definitely piqued. I need another clue!!!!

    Please??

If you use a parking structure downtown, you have likely been close enough to touch the sign.

I recall, years ago this establishment was the back portion of a thrift/consignment store. The proprietors sold used sporting goods (skis, camping equipment, hunting gear, etc.), thus, the name. I think this may have been late 70s, early 80s. I do not remember the name of the thrift store that was accessed from Mountain Ave.

wow what a shame this is a done deal

I made it my quest to track this place down…but I think I was too late. What a grave disappointment to just find myself in the back of a bar I’m at all the time, anyway.
